Types of Public Policy

There are four topics of public policy:
Environmental, social welfare, economic, and foreign policy
Public Policy is defined by cost and benefit analysis:
Cost- who is paying
Benefits- who gets the perks
The four types of public policy are defined by who is paying and who gets the perks.
Majoritarian, interest group, client, and entrepreneurial politics

Majoritarian Politics
Almost everyone benefits and almost everybody pays
Examples:
-Reducing drug use
-Defending the country
-Education programs

Interest group politics
A policy in which one small group benefits and another small group pays.
Examples:
-Labor Unions v Big Business

Client Politics
On small group benefits and almost everyone pays
Examples:
-Farm subsidies
Small group, in which everyone pays for
-Pork-Barrel legislation
A legislator wants to bring money into their district in order to benefit his or her own constituents
-Logrolling
“I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” benefit for the legislation for constituents and then voting in an alliance with another person for their votes.

Entrepreneurial politics
Almost everybody benefits and a small group pays the costs.
Examples:
-Superfund sites
Plots of lands that have been environmentally damaged beyond repair without serious funding. The small group puts the money into the venture while almost everyone benefits from the clean up. Environmental reclamation- improves water quality, etc.
-Improving car safety
Car companies are paying the costs in order to promote safety for all.
-Pharmaceutical regulations
FDA regulates, benefits all people to not have black market drugs. Reliability.
